Opatov, Prague: Visiting Guide

Opatov is a neighborhood in Prague 11, in the southern part of the Czech capital. Developed from the late 1960s as part of the Jižní Město (South City) housing estate, it is known for its mix of residential, commercial, and leisure spaces. The neighborhood is open to visitors year-round and is connected to the city by Metro Line C.

History and urban development

Prague’s growing population in the late 1960s prompted the creation of Jižní Město, among the largest housing estates in the country. Opatov was planned as a self-sufficient district combining homes, commerce, and leisure facilities (Nový Opatov). Its Communist-era architectural vision included prefabricated paneláky (apartment blocks) and a metro station, which opened in 1980 and connected residents to the city center (Finep).

Architects Jan Krásný and Jiří Lasovský, guided by urban engineer Miroslav Řihoška, worked with sociologists and artists on plans balancing homes, workplaces, green spaces, and cultural amenities. Not all proposals, including the “superdomy” towers, were built.

Since 2018, the Nový Opatov project has focused on sustainability, mixed-use development, and green infrastructure, in line with Prague’s Metropolitan Plan (IPR Prague). The renewal has added public squares, cafés, water features, and more than 425 trees (Novostavby.com). The redevelopment has been described as part of the renovation of the Opatov metro area (expats.cz).
