Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle, often called BURG, is an art and design university in Halle (Saale). History and significance
Giebichenstein Castle has served as a fortress and royal residence and has been a cultural landmark for centuries. In 1915, it became home to the “Handwerkerschule Burg Giebichenstein,” an art and design school inspired by the Deutscher Werkbund and Bauhaus. The institution developed from 19th-century craft schools.
Under Paul Thiersch, who led the school from 1915 to 1928, BURG pioneered interdisciplinary education aligned with modernist ideals. Despite the challenges of the National Socialist era, its creative ethos continued and was revived and expanded after World War II.
During the German Democratic Republic (GDR) period, the school became a center for industrial design, ceramics and textiles. Its workshops contributed to East German visual and material culture while balancing socialist ideals with artistic autonomy.
After 1990, BURG broadened its academic offerings to include multimedia, communication design and conceptual fashion. It is a cornerstone of German art education, bringing together fine and applied arts. Tips

For prospective students, courses are primarily taught in German, and German proficiency is required. International applicants register for entrance exams by March 11 (BURG application).
