History and accreditation
USIU-Africa was founded in 1969 with a vision of expanding international education into Africa. Registered under the Companies Act in Nairobi, it received authority to offer degree programs through a 1970 Memorandum of Understanding with the Kenyan government. During the 1970s and 1980s, it expanded its academic offerings and infrastructure, becoming a pioneer in private higher education in East Africa.
By the early 2000s, the university offered 11 accredited undergraduate and graduate programs. Following a brief affiliation with Alliant International University, USIU-Africa regained its independence in 2005 and achieved WASC accreditation in 2008. It rebranded in 2014, opened the Science Center in 2015, and opened the Freida Brown Student Center in 2016.
USIU-Africa is the only university in sub-Saharan Africa with dual accreditation from the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) and Kenya’s Commission for University Education (CUE). Its degree programs meet American and Kenyan educational standards, and its graduates receive globally recognized credentials.
