Aoyama Station and its role in Handa

Aoyama Station (青山駅), in Handa, Aichi Prefecture, is a Meitetsu Kōwa Line station and a gateway to the city’s historical districts and brewing heritage. It provides connections between Handa and the Nagoya metropolitan area and serves the Aoyama district.

Handa is known for sake and vinegar production, historic warehouses and scenic waterways. The Handa Red Brick Building, Mizkan Museum and Kuranomachi warehouse district along the Handa Waterway are among the local attractions.

History

Aoyama Station, formerly Minami Narawa Station, opened on July 10, 1933. It joined the Meitetsu group in 1943. The station building was replaced in 1993, the station was renamed in 2005, and the Tranpass magnetic fare card system was introduced in 2006. Its introduction enabled full automation, and the station became unstaffed.

A major reconstruction took place in 2010, followed by completion of a railway elevation project in 2013. The elevation project improved safety by separating road and rail traffic.
