History of The Crocodile
Founding and Early Years (1991–2007)
The Crocodile, originally the Crocodile Café, opened on April 30, 1991, at 2200 2nd Avenue. Founded by Stephanie Dorgan, it quickly became central to Seattle’s burgeoning alternative and grunge music scenes. The venue’s intimate setting hosted early performances by Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney, helping define the city’s global reputation for groundbreaking music (HistoryLink; Wikipedia). Dorgan’s partnership with R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck brought further prominence, while the café’s casual atmosphere fostered collaboration among musicians, journalists, and industry insiders (Cascade PBS).
Closure and Rebirth (2007–2009)
The Crocodile closed abruptly in December 2007, but was revived in March 2009 by a group including Sean Kinney of Alice in Chains and manager Susan Silver. Renovations improved the venue’s capacity, amenities, and accessibility, restoring its place at the heart of Seattle’s music community (Wikipedia).
Expansion and Modern Era (2009–Present)
After thriving for over a decade, The Crocodile relocated in 2021 to 2505 1st Avenue, expanding into a multi-venue complex featuring the main showroom (750 capacity), Madame Lou’s (300 capacity), and Here-After theater, alongside restaurants, bars, and a boutique hotel (The Crocodile). The venue continues to host world-class music and special programming, such as the Oodalalee Concerts at Pier 62, in partnership with Seattle’s Waterfront Park (Pollstar).
