Introduction: History and Cultural Significance

Situated in the heart of SoHo, New York City, The Drawing Center is a unique museum exclusively dedicated to the art of drawing. Since its founding in 1977 by Martha Beck—then assistant curator at the Museum of Modern Art—the Center has played a pivotal role in elevating drawing from a preparatory medium to a vital and diverse art form. Housed in a beautifully renovated 19th-century cast-iron building at 35 Wooster Street, with an additional Drawing Room at 40 Wooster Street, The Drawing Center offers a singular space for artists, students, and visitors from around the world to engage with historic and contemporary drawing.

Over the decades, the Center has grown from a modest storefront to a world-class institution. It has hosted over 230 exhibitions, published more than 85 catalogs, and welcomed tens of thousands of visitors annually. Its curatorial vision is interdisciplinary, connecting drawing to literature, science, architecture, theater, and more. The Drawing Center is widely recognized for championing both emerging and established artists, and for its commitment to accessibility and public engagement. (official Drawing Center website)
