What PortMiami Is

PortMiami, often called the “Cruise Capital of the World,” is a major gateway for international cruise travel and commerce. Located on Dodge Island at the mouth of the Miami River, it serves as an embarkation point for travel to the Caribbean and Latin America and is a key part of Miami-Dade County’s economy.

History

PortMiami’s development began in the early 20th century as Miami expanded its trade ambitions. Extensive dredging and land reclamation transformed the port from a modest harbor into a deep-water port for cargo and cruise traffic (miamidade.gov).

Cruise operations grew in the 1970s and 1980s, as Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian established Miami as a homeport. PortMiami handled more than 5 million cruise passengers annually by 2016, rising to a record 8.2 million in 2024 (Travel and Tour World; miamidade.gov).

The port generates $61 billion annually and supports more than 340,000 jobs (calleochonews.com). Its cargo operations handle more than 1 million TEUs per year, making it Florida’s top international cargo port and one of the busiest in the United States (FLA Ports). Its growth has also fostered job creation, cultural diversity, and tourism. Nearby neighborhoods include Little Havana, Wynwood, and South Beach (Travel and Tour World).

PortMiami operates as a landlord port, leasing terminals to cruise and cargo operators. Recent expansions include Norwegian Cruise Line’s Terminal B, Carnival’s Terminal F, and Virgin Voyages’ Terminal V. MSC Cruises’ Terminal AA is planned to be the largest in the world, and Royal Caribbean’s Terminal G is planned for 2027 (CruiseMapper).

In June 2024, the port launched shore power, reducing cruise ship emissions and noise pollution dramatically (miamidade.gov). It is also investing in electric cranes and flood-protection measures to improve resilience (calleochonews.com). In 2024, three new cruise terminals opened and the shore power project was completed. In 2025, PortMiami hosted ten cruise ships in one day, setting a world record. Terminal expansion and sustainability initiatives are ongoing (Travel and Tour World).

PortMiami’s cruise terminals are the main visitor facilities. Most terminals have cafés, shopping, Wi-Fi, and charging stations.

Freedom Tower Miami

The Freedom Tower is a historic Miami landmark associated with the city’s role as a gateway for Cuban immigrants in the 1960s. Built in 1925 as the Miami News headquarters, it became the Cuban Assistance Center in the 1960s and processed thousands of refugees. The building is known for its Mediterranean Revival architecture and historical significance (freedomtowermiami.org).

Its rotating exhibitions focus on Cuban culture, immigration, and local art. The site has a gift shop, café, free Wi-Fi, and multilingual guides.

PortMiami operates 24/7 for cargo and cruise operations. Most cruise terminals open about four hours before scheduled sailings and close after departures; confirm exact terminal hours with your cruise line.

PortMiami does not sell cruise tickets. Buy them from your cruise line or an authorized travel agent. Special tours or events may require separate tickets, available through official port or city websites.

Getting to PortMiami

  • Car Reach the port via Port Boulevard and the PortMiami Tunnel.
  • Public transit Tri-Rail, Brightline, and Metrorail connect to downtown; shuttle and taxi services connect to the port (Miami and Beaches).
