What this guide covers

The University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC), at 3901 Rainbow Boulevard in Kansas City, Kansas, brings together medical education, patient care, healthcare research, and a long history of medical innovation. Its campus includes hospitals, research facilities, and educational buildings, as well as the National Cancer Institute-designated University of Kansas Cancer Center.

This guide also covers two Kansas City historical sites: the Quindaro Ruins, associated with the abolitionist movement and Underground Railroad, and the Liberty Memorial and National WWI Museum and Memorial.

For campus maps, tour schedules, and updates, visit the KUMC Official Site or use the interactive KU Smart Campus Map.

History

KUMC was founded in 1905. Its history includes Kansas’s first liver transplant and pioneering work in deep brain stimulation surgery, alongside other advances in neurosurgery. The Eleanor Taylor Bell Hospital, dating to 1906, was a cornerstone of regional medical service. The University of Kansas Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive center.

The Quindaro Ruins mark the site of a 19th-century abolitionist town that played a pivotal role in the Underground Railroad and anti-slavery movement. Quindaro served as a sanctuary for escaped slaves.

The Liberty Memorial, completed in 1926, honors World War I veterans. Its 217-foot tower and adjoining museum are part of the National WWI Museum and Memorial complex.
