Peterson Ridge is centered on the intersection of Peterson Avenue and Ridge Avenue on Chicago’s North Side, near the Edgewater and West Ridge neighborhoods. It is known for its cultural diversity, historic roots, green spaces, and commitment to sustainable urban development.
The Peterson/Ridge Metra Station, which opened in June 2024 after years of community advocacy, connects Edgewater and West Ridge with downtown Chicago and the northern suburbs (ABC7 Chicago, Metra Station Details). The station fills a gap on the Union Pacific North Line, connects residents to more than 100,000 jobs within an hour’s commute, and supports access to jobs and education. History
Peterson Ridge’s rail history dates to Chicago’s expansion in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Stations including Summerdale, Rose Hill, and Kenmore served local residents along the Chicago and North Western Railway and helped spur community growth. They closed in 1958 amid system consolidations, leaving a transit gap that persisted for decades.
Despite mid-century urban decentralization and car-centric planning, the area remained significant because of its major roads and proximity to Rosehill Cemetery. New residential development and the long-awaited Metra station have brought new residents and businesses while the area retains its diverse heritage.

The Peterson/Ridge station is on Metra’s Union Pacific North Line. Station access is available during train operating hours, from early morning to late evening. Tickets and Fares
Peterson/Ridge is in Zone C. A one-way ticket to downtown is approximately $5.75; discounted fares are available for seniors, students, and children (Metra ticketing page). Tickets can be purchased through the Ventra app, at station vending machines, or onboard. Vending machines accept card and cashless transactions. Facilities, Accessibility, and Parking
The station has two six-car platforms, allowing boarding from both sides of Peterson Avenue. Facilities include heated shelters, digital signage, a public announcement system, accessible ramps, tactile warning strips, and secure bicycle racks. The station is ADA-compliant and has accessible ticketing. There are no restrooms on-site.
A commuter parking lot has approximately 50 spaces. Paid parking is managed by SP+ Parking and can be paid through the Parking.com app (Parking.com).
Getting There and Safety
The station is served by several CTA bus routes, including #84 and #49B, and is accessible by bicycle and on foot. Bike-friendly routes and Divvy Bikes are also available (Divvy Bikes).
