What The Drake Hotel is

At 140 East Walton Place in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood, The Drake Hotel is a historic hotel near the Magnificent Mile, Oak Street Beach, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Chicago Water Tower, and 360 CHICAGO. Designed by Benjamin H. Marshall and Charles E. Fox, it combines Italian Renaissance and Beaux-Arts influences with ornate stonework, grand public spaces, and views of Lake Michigan.

History

Prominent hoteliers Tracy C. Drake and John B. Drake, Jr. conceived the hotel in 1919 as an opulent establishment at the northern end of Michigan Avenue. Construction began that year, and The Drake opened on New Year’s Eve, 1920, becoming a social center in Chicago (Oldest.org, Classic Chicago Magazine).

The hotel initially had more than 500 guest rooms, multiple ballrooms, and elegant dining venues. In 1932, it introduced the Cape Cod Room, described as Chicago’s first themed restaurant (Oldest.org). During the 1920s, The Drake hosted galas, political gatherings, and jazz performances. The Palm Court’s afternoon tea tradition also began in this era (Classic Chicago Magazine).

The Coq d’Or opened the day after Prohibition was repealed in 1933 and became a popular institution (Oldest.org). During Prohibition, the Palm Court and Coq d’Or were also reported to have served as clandestine meeting places for bootleggers and socialites (Haunted Diary). The hotel weathered financial challenges during the Great Depression and served military personnel during World War II.

The illuminated Drake sign became a feature of the city skyline in 1940. The hotel’s ballrooms hosted major civic events, and it appeared in Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest (1959). It was later featured in Risky Business and The Blues Brothers, as well as in books including Haunted Chicago (UMich Student Projects). Its haunted reputation has also been covered in ghost tours and paranormal literature (Haunted Diary).

Hilton International acquired The Drake in 1980, and restoration work has maintained historic features while adding contemporary comforts. The hotel is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places (Waymarking).
