History
Hancock Recreation Center
The Recreation Center occupies the historic Hancock Golf Course clubhouse, constructed in the 1930s. The clubhouse has hosted dances, meetings, and cultural events since that decade. Archival photographs—including an iconic 1950s dance photo—document its place in Austin’s social life. See the Portal to Texas History and Austin History Center General Collection Photographs.
Over time, the center has adapted to Austin’s changing population. Its multipurpose rooms and event spaces support neighborhood meetings, cultural celebrations, and activities for people of all ages. City and community efforts have helped preserve the building, with renovations respecting its historic character. Documentation by the Austin History Center and city heritage inventories highlight its significance. Photographs and documents held by the Austin History Center and University of North Texas Libraries support local history projects and educational initiatives.
Hancock Golf Course
Established in 1899, Hancock Golf Course is one of Texas’s oldest continuously operated municipal golf courses and the oldest continuously operated golf course west of the Mississippi. Its enduring popularity and preserved natural setting reflect Austin’s commitment to accessible public green spaces.
Hancock Monument
The Hancock Monument commemorates one of Austin’s foundational figures and reflects the city’s early 20th-century heritage. It is a destination for history enthusiasts and a site for community events and educational programs.
