About Spelman College

Spelman College is a historically Black liberal arts college for women in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 1881, it is known for its history of educating African American women and its connections to civil rights, social justice, and community advancement. History

Spelman was founded as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary by Sophia B. Packard and Harriet E. Giles to address the educational needs of Black women in the post-Civil War South. Support from John D. Rockefeller helped secure the college’s current campus site (Spelman History and Traditions Brochure). The institution was renamed Spelman Seminary in 1884 and Spelman College in 1924 (Discover Atlanta).
