History and architecture
Commissioned by the Royal Liver Assurance group, established in 1850, and designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas, the Royal Liver Building was completed in 1911. It attracted visitors from its opening and was celebrated as one of the world’s first skyscrapers and the tallest building in Europe. Upon completion, it was Britain’s tallest building, standing 98.2 metres (322 feet) to the top of its spires.
Its reinforced concrete frame was a pioneering engineering achievement: it was among the first buildings globally to use one, and is also described as a world first that set a standard for future skyscrapers (Wikipedia, The Liverpudlian). Granite cladding adds grandeur and durability. The façade’s symmetry, Ionic columns and decorative stonework reflect its Edwardian Baroque and Beaux-Arts design.

The Liver Birds
Designed by Carl Bernard Bartels, the Liver Birds are copper sculptures more than 5.5 metres tall, with a 3.6-metre wingspan. One faces the city and the other the sea, symbolising protection for citizens and sailors. Legend says that if they were to fly away, Liverpool would cease to exist (Historic Liverpool; Liverpool Echo).
