What Cavern Mecca and the Cavern Club are
Cavern Mecca was a fan-led Beatles sanctuary near the original Cavern Club on Mathew Street. Established in 1981, it gave fans a place to gather, grieve and celebrate the band’s legacy. Cavern Mecca ceased operating in 1984, but its influence continues through the Cavern Club and Liverpool’s Beatles tourism scene.
The Cavern Club is a live music venue in Liverpool’s Cavern Quarter, at 10 Mathew Street. It is internationally associated with The Beatles and the Merseybeat movement, and remains part of Liverpool’s music scene. The club hosts tribute bands, original artists and special events.
For updates, see the official Cavern Club website, Visit Liverpool and research from the University of Liverpool.
History
The Cavern Club opened in 1957 as a jazz cellar, inspired by Parisian jazz culture. Its brick-vaulted arches became associated with Liverpool’s musical identity, and by the early 1960s it was at the heart of the “beat” music movement (Cavern Club History; Explorial).
The Beatles first performed at the club in 1961. They played 292 times there between 1961 and 1963—nearly 300 performances—helping define the Merseybeat sound and launch their international career. The club also helped launch other major acts during the British Invasion (Impressions of Liverpool; The Liverpudlian; Seethebigworld).
The original premises closed in 1973. In January 1981, Beatles enthusiasts Jim and Liz Hughes established Cavern Mecca on Rainford Square and Mathew Street, close to the original club. The venture followed both the closure of the original Cavern Club and the wave of mourning among fans after John Lennon’s murder in December 1980.
Cavern Mecca was volunteer-built and featured a replica of the Cavern Club, a coffee bar, galleries displaying memorabilia from the founders’ collection, and the Magical Mystery Store, which sold Beatles merchandise. It became a community hub, hosted events and was a focal point for early Beatles tourism in Liverpool.
The Cavern Club was rebuilt in 1984 using many original bricks and restored as a live music venue. Cavern City Tours has managed the club since the 1990s. Local authorities, heritage groups and academic researchers continue to support its preservation (University of Liverpool).
Cavern Mecca helped establish Liverpool as a “mecca” for music fans and contributed to the growth of annual conventions and the preservation of the Cavern Club. Beatles-related tourism generates tens of millions annually for Liverpool’s economy and supports its grassroots music scene. The club’s influence also underpins Liverpool’s designation as a UNESCO City of Music (Visit Liverpool).
What to see and do
The Cavern Club has two stages, a bar, a gift shop and brick-vaulted cellars. Regular live performances include tribute acts and original artists. Guided tours share memorabilia and behind-the-scenes stories, with access described as including exclusive views of memorabilia (Liverpool Theatres; Explorial).
The Cavern Pub, opposite the club, offers additional seating, free entry and nightly live music. Official Beatles merchandise is also available at the Liverpool Tourist Information Centre.
Liverpool International Beatleweek, first conceived by Cavern Mecca’s founders, takes place each August and attracts thousands of people for live performances, talks and fan activities. Guided walking and bus tours operate year-round. The Magical Mystery Tour is a guided bus tour of Beatles landmarks, including Penny Lane and Strawberry Field.
