What Piri Reis University Is

Piri Reis University (PRU), located in Tuzla on Istanbul’s Asian coast, is Turkey’s first institution devoted exclusively to maritime sciences, technology, and engineering (oktamam.com). It has faculties covering maritime sciences, engineering, economics, and law, and offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in maritime sciences, marine engineering, logistics, environmental management, and business administration.

PRU’s curriculum combines theoretical learning with practical skills, supported by advanced simulation facilities and industry partnerships. Applicants can seek admission through the national university entrance exam or international student pathways. Most programs are offered in English, with the exception of law (pirireis.edu.tr). Most faculties teach in English, except for the law faculty.

The university is a member of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), which is connected to the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Its programs comply with IMO’s Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW), providing globally recognized qualifications (pirireis.edu.tr; oktamam.com).

EduRank (2025) places PRU 132nd in Turkey and 6,260th globally, with strengths in engineering, business, economics, and environmental sciences (edurank.org).

PRU participates in international programs such as Erasmus and offers exchange opportunities and global partnerships in an English-language academic environment (pirireis.edu.tr). It maintains ties with the Turkish Chamber of Shipping and a network of maritime companies, shipyards, and logistics firms. These partnerships provide students with internships, cooperative education, and direct employment opportunities (oktamam.com).

The university also collaborates with LojiDer (Logistics Service Providers Association), Teknopark Istanbul, TÜBİTAK Marmara Teknokent, and IMEAK Chamber of Shipping on research projects focused on sustainable maritime practices and innovation (sustainability.pirireis.edu.tr). PRU co-hosts the International Symposium on Energy Management and Sustainability (ISEMAS) with the University of Sharjah and the Sustainability Development and Environment Association, bringing together experts from around the world (isemas.org).

History

The university grew out of the Turkish Maritime Education Foundation (TÜDEV), established in 1995. Initially a maritime training center, the institution became a university in 2008. PRU is named after Piri Reis, the renowned Ottoman admiral and cartographer whose work in navigation and cartography helped shape the university’s emphasis on exploration and scientific advancement.

Campus and What to See

Tuzla Green Campus

Designed by Kreatif Architects, the Tuzla Green Campus is Turkey’s first BREEAM-accredited “Green Campus.” Its sustainable architecture uses eco-friendly building materials, generates 45% of its own energy, and incorporates water recycling systems.

The campus consists of eight interconnected blocks designed to preserve the natural shoreline and maximize green spaces (Domus Architecture). Green initiatives include on-site energy generation, seawater purification, and rainwater recycling (Piri Reis University Green Campus).

Academic facilities include maritime simulators, a storm scenario pool, fire drill units, laboratories, and a comprehensive library (PRU International Services). The simulators provide immersive training for more than 50 types of vessels and sea regions.

The campus also has open-air gathering spaces, sports facilities, a waterfront used for maritime training and recreation, and campus clubs and events. Its proximity to Teknoparks and industry partners provides students with research, development, and career opportunities.

Training Vessel

The 127.59-meter Piri Reis University Ship serves as a floating classroom for practical seafaring education. Boarding requires special permission, but visitors can view the vessel from the shore.
