The Embassy of Ireland and Irish community in Stockholm

The Embassy of the Republic of Ireland in Stockholm provides consular services and promotes Irish culture, heritage and community engagement. Its work supports Irish-Swedish ties through cultural exchange, support for the Irish diaspora and public events, in line with Ireland’s Global Ireland 2025 strategy.

Stockholm is home to a vibrant Irish community. The Embassy connects with Irish residents and visitors and takes part in the city’s multicultural life. Its location in central Stockholm also makes it possible to combine cultural activities with visits to historic landmarks such as Stockholm City Hall, the Royal Palace and the Vasa Museum.

History

Stockholm City Hall

Stockholm City Hall (Stockholms stadshus) was designed by Ragnar Östberg and completed in 1923. Built in the National Romantic style, it has a red-brick exterior and a tower topped by the golden Three Crowns, Sweden’s national emblem. It is the seat of the municipal council and a symbol of Stockholm’s political and cultural heritage. The building is also known as the venue for the Nobel Prize banquet.

Royal Palace of Stockholm

The Royal Palace (Kungliga slottet) is the official residence of Sweden’s monarch and a Baroque landmark. Built in the 18th century on the site of the old Tre Kronor Castle, it hosts state ceremonies and represents centuries of royal heritage.

Vasa Museum

The Vasa Museum (Vasamuseet) houses the world’s only almost fully intact 17th-century warship and the world’s oldest preserved warship. Commissioned by King Gustavus Adolphus, the Vasa sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 because of a design flaw. It was salvaged in 1961 and is now a centerpiece of maritime history.

What to see and do

Embassy-led cultural initiatives and Irish community life

The Embassy supports Irish arts, music, literature and language through collaborations with local museums, galleries and theaters. Events include film screenings, art exhibitions, literary readings and concerts showcasing Irish talent. Collaborations with institutions such as the Etnografiska Museet have also resulted in Irish-themed exhibitions and workshops.

Community events include St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, traditional music sessions (céilís), storytelling evenings and communal meals. The Embassy supports Irish societies that offer language classes, Gaelic sports and charity initiatives. It also participates in major city events such as the Stockholm Culture Festival and St. Patrick’s Day events, contributing Irish music, dance and cuisine. In July 2025, the calendar is expected to feature concerts, theater and food fairs, with Irish performances and informational booths.

Educational programs include partnerships with Swedish schools and universities to promote Irish language, literature and history. The Embassy supports Irish language classes and guest lectures, and provides resources for academic exchanges and scholarships. It also helps Irish artists, writers and entrepreneurs build networks and gain visibility in Sweden.

The Embassy provides resources on Irish history and contemporary society, and guides visitors to Irish experiences in Stockholm such as live music sessions, Irish pubs and sports clubs. Staff can offer practical advice on integration and Swedish customs. The Embassy also encourages participation in charity, environmental and cultural activities.

Stockholm City Hall

Highlights of City Hall include the Blue Hall, the Nobel banquet venue, and the Golden Hall, known for its mosaics. Guided tours in English and Swedish last about 40 minutes and provide access to both halls.

Royal Palace of Stockholm

The Palace contains museums, state rooms and royal collections. Guided tours in multiple languages and audio guides cover its art and history. The Changing of the Guard ceremony is another highlight.
