Tenerife North Airport
Tenerife North Airport (TFN), also known as Tenerife North–Ciudad de La Laguna Airport or Los Rodeos Airport, is a gateway to northern Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands. Located in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, it is 11 km from Santa Cruz de Tenerife and 3 km from La Laguna. The airport connects Tenerife with the other Canary Islands, mainland Spain and select international destinations.
TFN has a single, modern terminal and serves over six million passengers annually. It is a hub for Binter Canarias and Canaryfly inter-island flights, as well as carriers serving mainland Spain and select international routes. History
TFN began as Los Rodeos Airport in 1929, with official air services launching in 1930. It became an important link for inter-island and mainland travel despite operational challenges associated with its mountainous location and frequent fog.
On March 27, 1977, two Boeing 747s collided in dense fog at the airport, causing 583 fatalities. It was the world’s deadliest aviation accident. The disaster led to global changes in aviation safety protocols, communication and technology. A memorial garden at the airport honors the victims, and annual remembrance ceremonies are held there each March 27. Subsequent accidents also prompted modernization and enhanced safety standards.
Ongoing fog and safety concerns led to the opening of Tenerife South Airport in 1978 for most international flights. TFN then focused on domestic and inter-island traffic, remaining important for local connectivity.
