About Bogukmun-ro

Bogukmun-ro (보국문로) is a historic road in Seoul’s Seongbuk-gu district, running along the fortress wall beside Bukhansan National Park and the slopes of Bugaksan Mountain. It combines historical landmarks, mountain scenery and access to cultural attractions, including temples, traditional villages and museums. The road is a modernized corridor with roots in Seoul’s past (Exploring Bogukmun-ro).

History

Bogukmun-ro takes its name from Bogukmun Gate (보국문), meaning “Gate Protecting the Country.” The gate is described as one of four small gates along Seoul’s ancient fortress wall, as well as one of the Eight Gates of Seoul. The wall surrounded Hanyang, present-day Seoul, and stretched for 18.2 kilometers, with four large gates and four small gates.

Accounts date the wall’s construction to the 14th century and to the 15th century under King Taejo, founder of the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910). Bogukmun Gate is also dated to 1413. The area has another fortress history: Bogukmun Gate (북문) is described as one of the original gates of Bukhansanseong Fortress, built in 1711 to protect Seoul.

During the Joseon era, soldiers patrolled the wall, and the road served both defense and everyday travel, helping people and goods move through the mountainous terrain. The Imjin War (1592–1598), a Japanese invasion of Korea, damaged the fortress wall, including Bogukmun Gate. The gate was reconstructed in the 18th century. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Seoul’s rapid modernization and expansion changed the road to accommodate new transportation needs.

What to See

Seoul City Wall

The Seoul City Wall is described as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The section beside Bogukmun-ro follows the landscape of Bukhansan National Park and features stonework and defensive design. Walking along the wall offers views of Seoul and the surrounding mountains, with routes ranging from leisurely walks to more challenging climbs.

Bogukmun Gate

Also known as the North Gate or 북문, Bogukmun Gate stands at the northernmost point of the Seoul City Wall. Its two-story wooden pavilion is an example of traditional Korean architecture. The gate’s steep-slope location made it a strategic defensive structure, and it remains a reminder of Seoul’s history.

Bukhansan National Park and Hiking Trails

Bukhansan National Park is known for granite peaks, lush valleys, cascading waterfalls and temples. Its trails range from beginner-friendly paths to challenging climbs. Baegundae Peak, the park’s highest peak, and Insubong Peak, known for its rock formations, are among the popular peaks accessible from Bogukmun-ro.

Named trails include:

It is one of the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The complex includes a red gate, a T-shaped shrine and the burial mound, with carvings and a quiet atmosphere. Guided tours are available.

Wui-dong Valley

At the base of Bukhansan Mountain, Wui-dong Valley has trails alongside a stream. The relatively easy paths make it suitable for a leisurely walk or family outing. The valley is especially colorful during autumn foliage season, when leaves turn red, orange and yellow.
