Bram Fischer International Airport
Bram Fischer International Airport (BFN), about 10 kilometers east of Bloemfontein’s city center, is the main aviation hub for South Africa’s Free State province. Its single terminal handles domestic and limited international operations, and its 3.6-kilometer runway—one of Africa’s longest—accommodates large aircraft.
The airport serves passengers and supports the Free State’s agricultural and industrial sectors through cargo facilities. Its amenities include duty-free shops, dining and retail, business lounges, conference rooms, ATMs, free Wi-Fi, and accessible facilities. BFN also supports local tourism and business events.
For official visitor information, flight schedules, and ticketing options, see Airports Company South Africa, FlightsFrom.com, and the Free State Tourism website.
History and regional role
Commissioned in 1961 as Bloemfontein Airport, the airport’s runways were operational before its terminal. Its early use included both military and civilian operations in coordination with the adjacent AFB Bloemspruit.
The airport was renamed in 2012 in honor of Bram Fischer, a Bloemfontein native and anti-apartheid lawyer. Its location along the N8 Corridor connects Bloemfontein with nearby towns and cross-border centers such as Botshabelo and Maseru, Lesotho. The airport is also linked to the N1 and N6 highways.
Upgrades included a R46 million investment ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which modernized passenger amenities, security, and operational systems. BFN handles over 346,000 passengers annually and has capacity for up to 600,000 passengers per year. Its facilities support increased travel during conferences, festivals, and major sporting occasions.
The airport connects the Free State to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and George through airlines including Airlink, CemAir, and Safair. There are no direct international flights, but connections through Johannesburg and Cape Town facilitate onward travel worldwide. Its highway and air links also support regional connections to Kimberley and Maseru.
Expansion plans include the Bram Fischer Airport Boulevard, a 32-hectare mixed-use development, and a planned 3MW solar photovoltaic plant. These projects contribute to the Free State’s ambitions as a green energy and logistics hub.
