Qiddiya City spans more than 360 km² near Riyadh. Six Flags and Aquarabia are open; stadium, motorsport, esports, and other assets remain under development.
Qiddiya City is a 360-plus-square-kilometre development 45 kilometres from central Riyadh. Its first public anchors are no longer renderings: Six Flags Qiddiya City and Aquarabia are open and operating. Other announced assets—including the Speed Park Track, Prince Mohammed bin Salman Stadium, and Gaming and Esports District—remain under development, so a visit should be planned around the two open parks rather than the entire future-city map.
Officially launched in 2017 by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman under Vision 2030, Qiddiya is a Public Investment Fund project run by Qiddiya Investment Company. The master plan by Bjarke Ingels Group uses the 200-metre drop of the Tuwaiq ridge as an organizing spine, not a barrier. Five zones — Resort Core, City Center, Eco Zone, Motion Zone, Golf Community — stack against the cliff like shelves.
Six Flags Qiddiya City opened in late 2025 as the first Six Flags park outside North America. Qiddiya's official 2026 update also confirms that Aquarabia is open as a year-round waterpark. The official city plan lists more than 20 neighbourhoods and hundreds of future attractions, but most of that programme should not be described as a current visitor experience.
Visit now for one of the operating parks. Treat the stadium, motorsport circuit, Dragon Ball theme park, esports district, and other announced venues as future projects unless an official attraction page explicitly confirms public opening.
History
Before the first bulldozer arrived in 2019, this stretch of the Tuwaiq escarpment was already a road. Historic sources describe camel caravans threading through natural fissures in the 200-metre limestone wall, moving between Najdi oasis towns like Diriyah and the pilgrimage routes to Mecca and Medina.
Prehistoric cairns and burial mounds on the upper plateau suggest people had been reading this ridge for much longer. Modern engineers rerouted infrastructure around several of these stone traces rather than scrape them away.
The turning point
Michael Reininger arrived in Riyadh in 2018 with a résumé built at Walt Disney Imagineering and a brief to turn 376 square kilometres of escarpment into an entertainment city. The personal stakes were high: no one had delivered anything like this in the kingdom, and his next job depended on making theme-park economics work in the Najd.
On 28 April 2018, King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman gathered at the base of the cliff. After dark, high-lumen projections painted the raw limestone with rollercoasters, waterfalls, and mountain raceways. The pyrotechnics that followed converted a master plan into a national commitment Reininger could not quietly scale back.
The pandemic arrived 14 months later. Supply chains froze, international travel stopped, and every giga-project in the Gulf faced the same choice: pause or push. Reininger's final years at the helm were spent underground—geotechnical surveys, logistics, retaining walls—so the site could open gates instead of excuses in 2025.
Yes for the two operating parks: Six Flags Qiddiya City and Aquarabia. Many other advertised Qiddiya assets remain under development, so plan around a specific open park and confirm its official calendar.
Allow one full day for Six Flags or a separate full day for Aquarabia. Do not count venues still under development as part of a current itinerary.
Qiddiya City is about 45 km from central Riyadh. Confirm the current route, parking, shuttle, or public-transport instructions on the official page for the park you booked; future metro plans are not the same as a current service.
Come between November and March, when daytime temperatures sit at 12-25°C and the park runs comfortably in daylight. May through September the desert hits over 42°C, so smart visitors arrive after 4:00 PM and stay until midnight. October and April work, too, with 25-36°C afternoons and sharp canyon winds after dark.
The two operating theme parks require park-specific admission. Buy through official channels and check current prices; construction zones and future venues are not free sightseeing areas.
At Six Flags, the signature is Falcon's Flight. At Aquarabia, choose rides that match your group and the day's official operating list. Do not enter construction areas to seek views of future venues.
Qiddiya City is a 360-plus-square-kilometre development about 45 km from Riyadh. Six Flags Qiddiya City and Aquarabia are open; stadium, motorsport, esports, cultural, residential, and other components are being delivered in phases.
