History
Mohammed Ali Hafiz proposed the university in 1964. It was established in 1967 with support from Crown Prince Faisal. In its early years, KAU pioneered coeducation in Saudi Arabia, and its initial faculties included Economics and Administration, and Arts and Humanities.
The university became public in 1973 and integrated with the College of Shari’ah and Islamic Studies in Makkah. It later added faculties in Medicine and Engineering, as well as fields including Marine Sciences and Meteorology.
