Fablok “Śląsk” Locomotive at Wieliczka
The Fablok “Śląsk” type locomotive is part of Poland’s industrial and railway history. Designed and built by Fablok, the country’s first dedicated locomotive factory, these robust engines supported freight, passenger and industrial railway operations during Poland’s postwar recovery and modernization, particularly in mining regions.
An example is displayed outdoors near the Wieliczka Salt Mine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its underground salt corridors and mining heritage. The Fablok website and Wieliczka Salt Mine official site provide further information.
History
Fablok and Polish industrialization
Fablok—Pierwsza Fabryka Lokomotyw w Polsce, or First Locomotive Factory in Poland—was founded in Chrzanów in 1919. Near Kraków, major railway lines and industrial centers, it became an important part of Poland’s railway modernization. The factory initially built locomotives under foreign licenses before developing designs for Poland’s railway needs (Fablok Official).
During the interwar period, Fablok produced hundreds of locomotives for the growing railway network. Although World War II disrupted production, the factory’s infrastructure survived, allowing locomotive manufacturing to resume after the war. Following nationalization in 1945, Fablok expanded rapidly.
The “Śląsk” type
Developed in the early 1950s, the “Śląsk” (Silesia) type included the TKt48 and TKp classes. The TKt48, a Prairie tank locomotive with a 2-6-2T wheel arrangement, and the TKp, with a 0-8-0T arrangement, were designed for reliability on main and secondary lines and for industrial shunting (Polrails).
Between 1945 and 1963, Fablok produced 3,600 steam locomotives, including significant numbers for export.

What to see
The locomotive at Wieliczka
The Wieliczka Salt Mine preserves both mining and railway heritage. The Fablok “Śląsk” locomotive is typically displayed outdoors near the mine and is accessible from the main tourist routes. It illustrates the engineering used in industrial settings and the role of railways in Poland’s postwar development (UNESCO).
The locomotive’s durable construction suited the mine’s harsh underground and industrial environments. It played a role in transporting salt and materials within the mine’s extensive network. Conservation in the humid, saline environment involves regular maintenance, protective coatings and environmental controls, with railway museums and experts involved (Fablok history).
Interpretive signage, multimedia displays and educational workshops provide information about the locomotive and its historical context. Interactive exhibits and hands-on experiences are also available and are especially popular with students and enthusiasts (Polrails).
Other preserved “Śląsk” locomotives
Other preserved locomotives can be seen at the Railway Museum in Warsaw and Chabówka Railway Heritage Park. These sites feature interactive displays and, at times, steam demonstrations (locomotive.fandom.com).
