Osaka Metropolitan University

Osaka Metropolitan University (OMU) was established in 2022, bringing together the legacies of Osaka City University and Osaka Prefecture University. One of Japan’s largest public universities, OMU combines a longstanding academic heritage with research facilities and campuses across Osaka Prefecture, including Sugimoto, Abeno, Nakamozu, Habikino, Rinku, and Morinomiya.

For current information about events, facilities, and visitor programs, see the OMU official website.

History

Osaka City University (OCU) was founded in 1880 as the Osaka Commercial Training Institute. It contributed to economics, business, and medicine, and the Sugimoto and Abeno campuses retain historic buildings from this legacy.

Osaka Prefecture University (OPU) was formed in 1949 through the merger of technical schools. It specialized in engineering and life sciences; the Nakamozu, Habikino, and Rinku campuses reflect its contributions to regional industry and scientific advancement.

The unification of OCU and OPU in 2022 created OMU, bringing together their educational heritage, research, and community engagement (OMU official history; Times Higher Education).

What to see

Sugimoto and Abeno campuses

These campuses feature historic buildings that blend classic and modern architecture, an iconic clock tower, landscaped gardens, and a university museum with exhibits on Osaka’s urban and academic history. Libraries, cafeterias, and select research centers are open to the public during campus hours.

Nakamozu, Habikino, and Rinku campuses

Highlights include advanced engineering and science research centers and outdoor spaces reflecting Osaka’s industrial heritage. Their proximity to local industries enables joint exhibitions and events.

Morinomiya campus

The Morinomiya campus is scheduled to open in 2025. Designed as a “Forest of Knowledge,” it will combine modern architecture and green spaces. It is a 10-minute walk from Morinomiya Station, served by the JR Osaka Loop Line and Osaka Metro Chuo Line. Guided-tour and public-access details were to be announced closer to opening (OMU News).

Satellite offices

Umeda and I-site Namba are urban locations for continuing education, industry collaboration, and community engagement.
