What the places are

Cork and its surrounding region have four notable churches named Saint Mary’s:

  • Saint Mary’s and St. Anne’s North Cathedral, in Cork city centre
  • St. Mary’s Dominican Church, on Pope’s Quay
  • St. Mary’s Church, in Mallow
  • St. Mary’s Church, in Innishannon

Together, these sites reflect Cork’s ecclesiastical heritage, community life and architectural history, from Neo-Gothic Revival to neo-Romanesque design. The North Cathedral’s bells were cast by the same foundry as those of Notre Dame in Paris; Innishannon has a distinctive spire, and Mallow’s church houses historic relics. History

Saint Mary’s and St. Anne’s North Cathedral

The Cathedral of Saint Mary and Saint Anne, also known as the North Cathedral, has roots in the early 18th century; its baptismal records begin in 1731. (Wikipedia; Nomads Travel Guide) The current structure was dedicated in 1808 and was the first Catholic cathedral built in Ireland after the English Reformation. (Irishtopia)

The cathedral was built on a site that had served as a prison and courthouse. A fire in 1820 destroyed much of the building, which was rebuilt by architect George R. Pain. It remains the mother church of the Diocese of Cork and Ross. (Discover Ireland)

St. Mary’s Dominican Church, Pope’s Quay

The Dominicans arrived in Cork in 1229 and initially built outside the city walls. The current church, designed by Kearns Deane, opened in 1839, with Daniel O’Connell in attendance. The adjacent priory was completed in 1850. (CatholicIreland.net; Wikipedia)

St. Mary’s Church, Mallow

Built in 1818, St. Mary’s reflects the perseverance of Mallow’s Catholic community during Penal Times. Its Romanesque façade and campanile were added later. (Mallow Parish)

St. Mary’s Church, Innishannon

Located on a hill above the village, the church was built between 1810 and 1829. Its spire, originally from St. Luke’s in Cork, was added later. Designed by George Pain, the church features Gothic Revival elements. (Buildings of Ireland)

What to see

North Cathedral

The cathedral is an example of early Neo-Gothic Revivalist architecture, built of sandstone with limestone dressings. Its tower, added in 1869 by John Benson, houses nine bells cast in 1870 by John Murphy of Dublin. The same foundry made the bells for Notre Dame in Paris, and the bells were restored in 2022. (Nomads Travel Guide; Irishtopia)

Inside are a wooden altar crafted by Italian artisans, stained-glass windows and a spacious nave. The crypt beneath the sanctuary has been converted into a visitor centre.

The cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Cork and Ross and a centre of Catholic life in the region. It hosts major liturgical events and is a resource for genealogy. Daily Mass and community events are part of its continuing role. (Wikipedia; Church Services TV)

St. Mary’s Dominican Church

The church is a landmark of neo-Romanesque design, with rounded arches, stonework and stained-glass windows. Restoration projects address water damage and structural needs, coordinated by the Friends of St Mary’s Restoration Committee. (CatholicIreland.net)

The church is the novitiate for the Irish Dominican province and serves friars and lay Dominicans. Its pastoral centre offers counselling, addiction support groups, and adult education in theology, philosophy and scripture. (Wikipedia; Dominicans Cork)

St. Mary’s Church, Mallow

The church contains a rare silver chalice dating to 1680 and a restored sanctuary lamp. (Mallow Parish) It serves as a spiritual centre for Mallow and the Diocese of Cloyne, hosting daily Mass, major celebrations and community events. In 2024, it welcomed the relics of Saint Bernadette, drawing pilgrims from across the region. (Independent.ie)

St. Mary’s Church, Innishannon

The church features pointed arches, vaulted ceilings and German stained glass. It serves the parish of Innishannon, Crossbarry, Knockavilla and Upton, and remains at the heart of local spiritual and communal life. (Buildings of Ireland; Cork and Ross Parishes)

It is a protected architectural structure, with a distinctive bell tower and a hilltop setting. A virtual tour is available.
