Portuguese Foundations
Founded on September 15, 1832, as the “Publica Livraria,” the library was integral to the Portuguese administration’s vision for education and knowledge dissemination in Goa. Following the suppression of certain religious orders in 1834, their extensive book collections were incorporated, significantly expanding the library’s holdings. By 1897, it was elevated to the status of National Library, cementing its role as a custodian of Indo-Portuguese heritage.
Post-Liberation Transformation
After Goa’s liberation in 1961, the library was placed under the Government of Goa’s Directorate of Art & Culture. Its scope broadened to include a growing collection of Indian languages and efforts to modernize both infrastructure and services. The library is now home to over 180,000 volumes, including rare manuscripts and local newspapers, serving as a legal deposit and copyright library for books published in Goa.
