About Belagavi Airport
Belagavi Airport, also known as Sambra Airport (IATA: IXG), serves Belagavi city and nearby regions of Maharashtra and Goa. Located in Sambra, about 10 km from the city centre, it is a gateway to northern Karnataka and connects the region with Indian cities including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Delhi. The airport is used by business travellers, tourists and local residents.
History and planned development
Belagavi Airport was established in 1942 as a Royal Air Force base. Its modern terminal was inaugurated in 2017.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is developing a new 20,000-square-metre terminal, modelled after Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport. It is planned to handle up to 1,400 passengers during peak hours and will include three aerobridges and enhanced amenities (Namma Belagavi News). The project also includes extending the existing 2,300-metre runway to accommodate larger aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737, as well as improving operational safety and flight options.
An additional 56 acres are being acquired for the terminal, runway and road expansion, along with upgraded parking and passenger facilities (Construction World). The ₹230 crore project was set to begin in January 2024, with completion expected within two to three years. The new terminal, longer runway, expanded parking and advanced security systems were also described as planned for completion by 2026.
The expansion is expected to attract more airlines and routes, support trade, tourism and job creation, and align with India’s UDAN scheme for affordable regional air travel. The airport has potential for dual civilian and defence use, while its expansion plans include eco-friendly design and technological upgrades. Future infrastructure could support international flights.
