History of Kammertheater Karlsruhe
From Industry to Culture
The Kammertheater Karlsruhe’s journey is intertwined with the Hallenbau complex, designed in 1914 by Philipp Jakob Manz for the Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabrik (DWM). During World War I, the site became a major industrial hub, employing nearly 30,000 workers. After World War II, the decline of industry led to decades of abandonment (karlsruhe-erleben.de).
In 1981, the Kammertheater initiated the transformation of the Hallenbau into a cultural venue, first under temporary permits.
