Fondation Maeght

History
Aimé Maeght, an art dealer, was friends with artists including Georges Braque, Joan Miró and Fernand Léger. After the Maeghts lost their son Bernard in 1953, they decided to create a place where artists and the public could connect, in his memory.
They asked their friend, architect Josep Lluís Sert—a student of Le Corbusier and a proponent of modern architecture—to bring their vision to life. The Fondation opened in 1964. Sert’s design connects galleries with patios, courtyards and gardens, while artists took an active part in shaping the site: Miró conceived the labyrinthine courtyard and its sculptures, Braque designed the pool and mosaic, and Giacometti’s figures were placed in the sculpture garden.
Since its opening, the Fondation has become a centre for artistic creation and experimentation, with a permanent collection and a programme of temporary exhibitions, workshops and cultural events.
