What Arabia Is
Arabia Shopping Centre and its surrounding district are in Arabianranta, in northern central Helsinki. The area brings together Finnish industrial heritage, design institutions, retail, dining, public art and residential spaces. Its historic factory buildings now stand alongside modern urban development.
The Arabia district is accessible by tram, bus, bike and car. The city centre is about 15 minutes away, and free 10 Mbit/s internet is available throughout the district. For background, see Wikipedia: Arabianranta, Finnish Design, and Iittala & Arabia Design Centre.
History
The name “Arabia” appears in records as early as the 18th century (Wikipedia: Arabianranta). Accounts give two dates for the factory’s beginnings: one dates the establishment of the Arabia porcelain factory to 1871, while another gives its founding as 1873 (Creating a Sense of Place, Finnish Design).
The factory at Hämeentie 135 became a major employer and a centre of Finnish ceramics. Arabia’s tableware and decorative pieces became associated with quality, practicality and Finnish design, and remain prized in Finland and abroad. Arabia was founded in 1873 and Iittala in 1881; designers including Kaj Franck and Birger Kaipiainen helped shape their legacies (encyclopedia.design).
As traditional manufacturing declined in the late 20th century, the Arabia135 block was redeveloped for educational, cultural, office and commercial uses within the historic factory complex. The wider neighbourhood combines residential areas, creative-industry offices, higher education campuses and retail (Arabia135, Creating a Sense of Place).
Public art is integrated into the district. Helsinki’s requirement that 1–2% of building investments go to art has contributed to a district-wide trail of sculptures and installations by Finnish artists. Designed by Johanna Hyrkäs, the trail connects buildings and gardens (Wikipedia: Arabianranta).
The northern shores, once industrial land, have been transformed into a 220-acre residential resort and marina with a public park. The area now includes green spaces, waterfront amenities and modern infrastructure; property values are above the Helsinki average (Creating a Sense of Place). The district has a fiber-optic network providing free 10 Mbit/s internet and connections by tram, bus, bike and car (Wikipedia: Arabianranta, Arabia135).
