History and Mission
Founded by Belgian philanthropists Guy and Myriam Ullens, UCCA initially operated as the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, with a vision to bridge Chinese and international art worlds (UCCA Group; USA Art News). Since 2017, following a change in stewardship, UCCA has expanded its mission, emphasizing sustainable cultural development and broader community engagement.
The center has launched satellite venues such as UCCA Dune in Beidaihe, UCCA Edge in Shanghai, and UCCA Clay in Yixing, showcasing its commitment to diverse artistic practices nationwide. UCCA’s curatorial approach emphasizes research-driven programming, dialogue on contemporary issues, and fostering emerging talent, making it a leading platform for cultural exchange (UCCA Official).
