The problem

At Beijing Capital Airport, people will approach you inside arrivals offering a fast taxi. Those are unlicensed black cabs, and the quoted fare can be three or four times the real metered price before you even leave the curb.

How it works

Fake Peking duck redirect

How it works

A tout tells you the famous duck restaurant is full, closed, moved, or just around the corner, then walks you to a near-copycat restaurant with a similar Chinese name, inflated prices, and tourist menus that do not match local pricing.

Go only to the exact branch you researched. Check the full Chinese name and street address before you sit down.

Taxi meter scam

How it works

The driver claims the meter is broken, forgets to start it, or starts with a fare already running. At the end, you get a flat fee far above the legal fare and an argument you cannot win in bad Mandarin.

Rickshaw price-switch scam

How it works

A driver quotes a low amount to get you into the rickshaw, then midway or at the end claims the price was per person, per stop, or only for the first few minutes. The ride becomes a negotiation trap on wheels.
