History
Niterói was founded in 1573 by the Tupi chief Araribóia, who played a role in Portuguese colonization. Its position across Guanabara Bay from Rio de Janeiro made it important for defense and trade during the colonial period.
The Santa Cruz da Barra Fortress, established in 1555, helped defend the bay and Rio de Janeiro. Together with São João Fort and Tamandaré da Laje Fort, it formed a defensive triangle guarding the entrance to Guanabara Bay. Its hand-cut and hand-set stone walls cover an area of over 700 square meters.
The fortress also preserves military and religious heritage. It houses 45 cannons from the 18th and 19th centuries and a chapel dating to 1612, with an 18th-century image of Saint Barbara. During the Empire of Brazil, it served as the headquarters of the 1st Artillery Division and remained important to the defense of Rio de Janeiro and its port.
Today, the fortress is a historical site and tourist attraction. Its location on the east bank of Guanabara Bay offers views of the bay and the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Niterói.
