Mughal Era and the Jinjira Palace
Zinzira, located on the banks of the Buriganga River, is home to the Jinjira Palace, a 400-year-old edifice constructed between 1689 and 1697 by Nawab Ibrahim Khan, the then Subedar of Bengal. Initially built as a recreational retreat surrounded by water, its name is derived from the Arabic word 'Jazira,' meaning island (Archidiaries).
However, the palace's history took a darker turn when it became a site of imprisonment and sorrow. Following the defeat of Nawab Sarfaraz Khan in 1740, his family and some women of his harem were confined in the palace. Later, the family of the last independent Nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-Daulah, also faced imprisonment here due to the conspiracies of Mir Jafar’s son, Miran (Wikipedia).

Zinzira's historical significance is further underscored by its role during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. The area witnessed one of the most heinous massacres in the history of the conflict. On the night of March 25, 1971, during "Operation Searchlight," the Pakistani military launched a brutal crackdown on Dhaka. As people fled the city, the military targeted Zinzira Bazar on April 2, killing nearly 700 people. The massacre extended from Keraniganj to the unions of Zinzira, Kalindi, and Shubhadya (Archidiaries).
