The Heydar Aliyev Sports and Exhibition Complex and the adjacent Heydar Aliyev Center are landmarks in central Baku. History
The Heydar Aliyev Sports and Exhibition Complex opened in 1990 and was named after Azerbaijan’s third president in 2004. It is the country’s largest indoor venue for sports, concerts, and exhibitions, with a capacity of 8,000. It has played a central role in Azerbaijan’s emergence as a regional sporting and cultural hub (metro.gov.az).

Heydar Aliyev Center
The Center’s fluid, organic design contrasts with conventional Soviet monumentalism. Its curves draw inspiration from the waves of the Caspian Sea and Azerbaijani calligraphy. Advanced engineering and digital fabrication enabled the design, which received the London Design Museum’s Design of the Year Award in 2014 (ArchDaily).
The Center occupies nearly 16 hectares and serves as a cultural nexus connecting Baku’s historical core with new urban developments. Its landscape merges with the building and includes open spaces for public gatherings and outdoor events (WikiArquitectura).
The structure combines reinforced concrete and a steel space frame to create large column-free interiors. Curved “boot columns” and cantilever beams support its sweeping surfaces, while parametric design tools helped realize its complex geometry (Archeetect). The façade is clad in glass-fiber reinforced concrete and polyester, forming a luminous, seamless envelope (Google Arts & Culture).
The Center has three main zones:
- Heydar Aliyev Museum A three-story museum about Heydar Aliyev’s life and Azerbaijani history, with multimedia displays.
- Exhibition halls Flexible spaces for international art exhibits, forums, and cultural events.
- Auditorium and multifunctional hall A 967-seat auditorium and a large divisible hall for concerts, conferences, and performances.
Other attractions include the Mini Azerbaijan Exhibition and a collection of classic cars.

Heydar Aliyev Sports and Exhibition Complex
